St. Elizabeth of Hungary was a princess of the Kingdom of Hungary who married a German nobleman. With her husband's blessing and help, St. Elizabeth tended to the needs of the poor, the hungry and the sick of her community and even arranged to have two hospitals built to serve the sick. After her husband's death, St. Elizabeth joined the Third Order of St. Francis. She died of illness in November of 1231 at the young age of 24. Edith Stein died in a gas chamber at Auschwitz concentration camp in Poland on August 9, 1942 and is canonized as a martyr and saint of the Catholic Church.
