In 1830, when the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to Sister Catherine Laboure, she showed her an image of a medal and rays of light which emanated from jewels on Mary's hands. The rays of light symbolized the graces that would be given to those who asked for them. The jewels without rays were symbols of unclaimed graces. Mary asked Catherine to have a medal made after the model that she was shown and to spread devotion to the medal, which eventually became known as the "Miraculous Medal" because of the cures and conversions that resulted from devotion to it.
